More Information
The majority of my ministry training and background has been leading large teams in multisite churches. Working in that context, team development and ministry evaluation became crucial. Drawing on some of my earliest ministry experience in Outdoor Experiential Education, I developed a method to work with my teams on evaluating our ministry to foster health and growth. That method continues to be valuable as I work with and develop my teams, evaluate our ministry, and determine goals going forward.
The Basis of My Approach.
The “What? So what? N what? Debrief model” serves as the foundation for the coaching and consulting I offer. It begins by simply asking What is it you are doing? Then asking So what is working and what isn’t? Finally, asking Now what are you going to do? From there, we identify goals, set deadlines, and work with you to implement them.
People Matter
And the people in your church and your ministry matter most. So, in addition to discussing the what of ministry, it is also essential to talk about the who. Similar to the above process, we will discuss the people in your church and ministries. Working with you to identify key leaders and volunteers and determine goals for developing the people in the church and ministries. Because, at the end of the day, it is about the people.
What makes coaching different?
Coaching is unique from mentoring or discipling. Mentoring is often big-picture focused on where you want to be in five to ten years. Discipleship is often at the granular level, as in: you watch me do it, you do it with me, I watch you do it, repeat. Coaching is more big-picture than discipleship and more granular than mentoring. As a coach, I believe you are the expert in your context. My goal as a coach is not to conform your approach to things that have worked for me or others but to help you evaluate and adapt your strategy of ministry to better reach the people in your context.
More Background on Dave
I am a veteran of ministry, having served for fifteen years, with most of that time in large multisite churches. I have a B.A. in student ministry from Geneva, my M.Div. in Christian Leadership and Church Ministries from Liberty, and I am a NAYMC Certified Coach. This journey began when I started applying the principles of coaching and ministry evaluation outlined here in my contexts to multiply the impact I was having in my ministry. Something I tell all of my teams is if we are not intentional about our ministry, we will be unintentional about our ministry. As I saw traction in ministry applying these principles, God opened doors to begin coming alongside and encouraging others. And so this ministry venture has grown out of a desire to see others multiplying their impact and to see more people being reached with the gospel.
